eClass Gradebook

The Gradebook is a tool that instructors can use to keep track of their student’s grades and progress in an eClass course. It allows instructors to enter grades for course assignments and view a summary of their students’ grades in one place. The Gradebook is automatically connected to some activities that reside within your eClass course, such as quizzes. You also have the ability to add in grade items for assignments that are not occurring on eClass. When updated regularly, students will have an secure and accessible location to continuously check on their course progress, view numerical grades, and receive your additional feedback on assignments. Faculty are expected to use this feature, regardless of course modality.

FAQs

Yes! During a one-on-one training or consultation, our instructional support staff can:

  • Provide an overview of gradebook functions
  • Consult on gradebook design
  • Observe an existing gradebook setup
  • Troubleshoot a problem you’ve noticed with your grading scheme
  • Provide recommendations of best practices and tips for next steps

Please note that our instructional support staff cannot enter grades, nor modify any recorded grades, within the eClass gradebook on your behalf. Faculty remain solely responsible for managing and maintaining their electronic gradebooks.

Faculty are strongly encouraged to schedule a consultation appointment for initial gradebook design at the beginning of the semester, as well as a final gradebook review prior to the submission of final grades. Such appointments should be made at least 3-5 business days in advance. Appointment requests made within 24-48 hours of final grades being due may not be accommodated due to staffing or previous commitments.

Yes. Faculty are encouraged to periodically print out a current copy of the Gradebook report, and to print a final copy for their records after the semester ends.

The Gradebook may be backed up separately from the rest of the course by using the “Export” feature within the eClass Gradebook. Recorded grades can be exported as an Excel spreadsheet, plain text file, or XML file. This file can then be printed so that you have a physical copy.

Please note: This report will include the grades of all students in your course. For student privacy, an exported version of the gradebook should not be posted digitally or physically for students to view. Students are able to see their personal and most current gradebook report upon logging in to your eClass course.

Yes. The eClass Gradebook is not considered the official record of student grades, nor should it be considered a legally binding record of student scores. Faculty remain required to provide mid-term and final grades to the Registrar via the My MSMC Portal. The eClass Gradebook will not communicate grades to the Registrar automatically.

For information, please contact the IT Support Center, or refer to resources from the Registrar’s Office on the My MSMC Portal.
